Opening Reception: Sunday, February 22 from 2-4 pm
Out of the Incubator features new site-specific installations created by teams of artists who met at WSW during residencies and internships, and developed working bonds. These alumnae were commissioned to explore the creative possibilities engendered by the collaborative process.
Women's Studio Workshop and the Islip Art Museum present site-specific work by:
Natalie Campbell, Carissa Carman, Heidi Neilson, & Liz Zanis
SP Potluck Project, Video Installation, 2009
SP Potluck Project is a working laboratory for video collaboration, the first phase of which was at Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's Swing Space Residency. The long term goal of this project is an investigation into the process and nature of collaboration itself. As former residents, fellows, and interns at WSW, the group is interested in the utopian nature of artist communities. The communal meal is the premise for a video installation that documents and reflects the process of working together.

Suspended in August (late), Multi-channel Video Installation, 2009
Suspended In August (late) is an owl drawing constant circles above a roadside-picnic-home-video. Eight years after these two artists first collaborated, Lambert and Leventhal reunite to create this low-tech installation that combines animation and video. Suspended In August (late) presents the relationship between the artists and the ways in which they understand their place in nature and manufactured space. The circling owl hunts and soars while the women eat potatoes, hamburgers, asparagus, and mayonnaise.
Clarissa Sligh & Chris Petrone
Drawing Conversations, Installation of Works on Paper, 2009
Drawing Conversations is a long-distance collaboration between Clarissa and Chris, using the US Postal Service. A series of mixed media prints and drawings on paper were sent back and forth between Philadelphia, PA, Asheville, NC, and Rosendale, NY. The artists explored the relationship between exchange and intuition as they altered each other's work, whose intimate dialogue is now presented in a public space.
Collectively, WSW's 35 years of commissioned works constitute a critical mass that is changing society's understanding and appreciation of the content of women's art. This exhibition offers an in-depth look into the history of support for women artists, and a celebration of this ongoing vision.
During the course of the exhibition, the Islip Art Museum will host a series of informative and technical workshops designed to give artists the tools they need to build successful careers in the art world. Call 631-224-5402 for a schedule and reservations.

Islip Resarch
Met Mary and Bill at Islip the other day. They are VERY excited and willing to be very flexible and accommodating.
Here is the lowdown.
Here is the lowdown.
- I have reserved two ladders for installation, one 12 foot and the other 16 feet
- They will re-paint a window that is seeping light, and cut a board that covers the glass in the door.
- There is a "cubby" around both sides of the fireplace for a possible book install(sign-in book)
- We have the option of installing the weekend after the previous exhibit gets de-installed. We have to coordinate in advance with them as they are normally closed on Sundays. The are willing to staff a "day-off", in which case we should let WSW know if anyone else would like to use a staffed weekend day.
- I have detailed documentation/video of the space(uploading soon to come, cord at studio)
- We need: installation mounting mechanism for the ceiling( I have drawings and measurements that will guide this)
- They will have accessible a saw, misc hardware, paint on site. For install it is encouraged however to bring any tools that we will be using often.
- Possible option to have the door window used for a sign/display.
- Curtains should be double layered and 59" wide by 100" (to beam) or 111" (to floor)
- Encouraged to make the projection holder first and then create the structure to install it to the ceiling beams or light beams (is better to visualize with photos)
